- Community Importing is available for all accounts(previously being paid accounts only), providing they are the maintainer/admin of both comms.
Hey, look, they went ahead and did what they said they were gonna do. Nifty

- Claiming Open IDs and integrating them into your existing DW account is explained in detail.
A bit of a delicate procedure, but totally worth it. Awesomesauce, basically. ♥

- No-invite account creation will remain open so long as the ratio of paid users is maintained at a sustainable level.
YAY! Meaning that so many people love DW they're buying paid accounts right off the bat, and enough people are signing up that they can keep a steady ratio! (if you haven't already signed up, LJ flist, now's the perfect opportunity...*cough* ;)

- DW will not be deleting any "abandoned" accounts i.e. if your account has nothing in it, then that's okay, they won't delete it like some others around here, with minor exceptions.
If you've claimed an account on DW at some point in the past but have not used it, because of whatever, you don't have to worry about it being purged to reclaim usernames

- And loads of other updates and explanations! Check it out!

For those who have recently made a DW account or are looking at one, I highly recommend this tool, which looks at your LJ flist and finds anyone on DW with the same username. It wouldn't work with users like me, who've got a different name on DW vs. LJ, but for most people, it'll bring back good results.

That I can view my entire flist, comms and journals, in a reasonable amount of time. I've stopped watching quite a few comms, and I think it's because pretty much most shows are pretty quite right, now, but, hey, getting back into the swing of fandom is a good thing, right?

OH ALSO. Everyone needs to go read [livejournal.com profile] lunasky3's Mafia!AU Sam/Lucifer fic and [livejournal.com profile] princess_aleera's fic in the same 'verse of Dean being a detective and also kinda a jerk but loving Sam and having to deal with Cas's soul-staring.
YOU KNOW YOU WANNA.

Onto a less happy and more infuriating note:

The Return of Livejournal
by Neal Ungerleider

LiveJournal, one of the web's most popular early blogging sites, is launching a comeback in the United States. Their plans for 2012 include massive changes for users. Oh, and "Game Of Thrones" creator George R.R. Martin is a big user.

Read more if you're interested in some of the history and dynamics of LJ and the screwing over we know is to come )

And this is why I love Dreamwidth. Because it's not LJ and their BSery

Someone gifted my 6 months of paid time over here, and I plan on putting it to very good use. I also figured I'd make it clear for everyone on my flist who crossposts; if there's a post on DW, that's where I'm commenting/interacting. It's just easier for me, since I read my DW list first and go through it first nowadays.

Sherlock was amazing, my gosh. I'm sure everyone who's seen it knows, and to everyone who hasn't...why haven't you? It's one of the best, smartest shows out there!
Now I have to wait to find a copy I can cap...:D

Also, forwarding this on, since [personal profile] donna_c_punk posted it on hers. A Study in Motherfucking Scarlet. Because it's a hilarious reworking of the first book.

Back home! Which I am happy for. It's nice to be back on my computer and be back in my own bed. Mum is too. Hotels are always exhausting. And since we switched back over to our first doctor from the last time she had cancer, it was like a complete breath of fresh air.

For those who haven't heard, another huge selling point for DW just went live. Namely, the ability to fully import a community from LJ to DW. Everything. As of right now, it's restricted to paid accounts and communities with less than 100k comments to prevent the queue from overloading and to ensure the system doesn't all crash from the overload, but they expect to be able to raise those limits in a couple weeks or so once traffic slows down.

Not gonna make any prognosis as to how this will effect fandom and LJ, but...well, you can draw your own conclusions.

In a DW related note, this entry on Technical Debt that [staff profile] denise wrote earlier this year is a fascinating look at what it took to get DW up and off the ground and why LJ has some of the problems it does (and, indirectly, because it was written before the new roll-out and commenting layout and why LJ had to completely recode their S1 layout to give us the new version). I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the difference between DW/LJ beyond the obvious as well as just because it's incredibly interesting from any point of view.

I've been reading a lot, pages and pages, of essays, how-to guides, explanations, and other kinds of informative stuff about DW, LJ, the differences, the pros for LJ and the cons for DW and vice versus, and I just have to say, wow. I feel a lot more informed about making a decision in the future at some point about leaving LJ for good. Don't worry; it isn't happening yet and probably won't for a while, but it's done a lot to explain why LJ is the way it is and how it works internally vs. how we see it working as users. Ditto with DW(which is, by nature, a lot more transparent, and therefore needs less external rationalization/explanations).
It all made my analytical geeky side so happy. Literally. I'm reading an essay on why the current advertising method isn't gonna work for social media for much longer.

For some lighter fare, Jibjab says adios to 2011!

Apparently I am on a DW version of this joyful thing. Yay linksurfing and random communities!

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all had fantastic days! My flist is full of Christmas wishes so I'll keep it short; you guys are all awesome, and I couldn't ask for a better group of friends to have. ♥
Christmas went...as well as could be. Pretty good for our family, of which I'm very proud. What does it say about me that I woke up and thought "Oh, hey, Doctor Who day!"

But the real reason for this post! Dreamwidth is officially about to release Community Imports. For those who don't know, Dreamwidth allows you to back up/copy/import everything from your individual LJ account into a new Dreamwidth one. Before now, there was no way if you wanted to move your comm to the safety of DW, because they hadn't developed a system to do so. But, apparently one of their lead developers has been working on it, and they've decided to announce it this week as a sort of Merry Christmas. It won't officially be released for another week or so, but, still, it's exciting! This could really, really change the landscape around here, if comms get transferred over. I think it should be, of course, something like a vote or such for the comms with a large userbase, but, still. It could pave the way for fandom to jump ships. *shrugs* And that makes me happy because DW is sorta like the land flowing with milk and honey and shiny new features.

It's very, very interesting. I got very excited when I saw the news update last night. To be honest, I hope fandom starts transitioning. I don't want it all gone, because LJ does have lots of benefits, but, I'd like to see DW actually give it some competition. That would be amazing, because that might drive LJ to listen to the users, maybe.

(For other DW users, there's even more cool features they announced re: comments AND TAG MERGE OMG DW YOU CAN HAVE MY SOUL HERE TAKE IT and the staff actually answer and explain stuff and just in general...I'd totally recommend reading the whole update!)

Anyways. Wanted to share the news, for those who don't have DW or weren't paying a ton of attention. :)
