More Feedback Week, Feb 11-19, Leave a Comment

More feedback week is a little initiative to get everyone in fandom to leave just a few more comments this week, to drop feedback when you ordinarily wouldn't.
Go do check it out! You can post your own items to request feedback and check out things other people have mentioned.

[community profile] scifibigbang/[ profile] scifibigbang is signing up! You can visit the LJ or DW site to sign up. There's opened sign ups for artists and writers, and they're open for a while(first drafts of writer's stuff isn't due 'till June 30th!). Minimum word count is 20k.

Gooo, you know you want to! I'll be signing up as a artist tomorrow or this weekend, depending on when I get time to make my brain work again.

ETA: OH MY GOD SO MANY FANDOM THINGS TO DO, SO LITTLE TIME. Somebody hold me, I'm having my begining of the month 20in20 themes getting posted nervous breakdown. D:

On the 1st, I will be getting my first haircut in over two years...and my first hair-cut where I got rid of this length since I was a pre-teen.
This is slightly terrifying. But also exciting. I know, don't ask me to pick one. I've decide that this pic of Hannah is what I'm going to be taking for her to check up. And I need to fill out the Locks For Love form, but I'm pretty much just stuck waiting 'till then.

Finally am listening to Ceremonials, and it is glorious, because, hello, it is F+TM. And I am THIS CLOSE to finishing Psych, after delaying for so long. NGL, it's so I can get onto Castle, which is now waiting longingly for my attention. \o/

Sherlock has literally left me making unintelligible noises. I can't tell if it's from the sore throat that makes it painful to actually speak, or if it was just that...amazing, but I think I'm certainly leaning towards the latter with a dash of the former.

Yes, it is mind-blowing. And I will spoil no further. But you should watch it as soon as you can, and, of course, bring tissues. Even I teared up and got to whimpering.

It reminds me of a quote from Den of Geek that I saw on tumblr, explaining why Martin choose Sherlock over The Hobbit, and why Peter Jackson still wanted him no matter what.

(completely unrelated, but I feel that damn urge from S1 starting up again; I need to ship Sherlock/Molly, apparently)

Accomplished. \o/ Now that's the last thing I'm buying 'till I go back to work. Honest to God promise. Cross my heart. I was gonna get that Def Leppard Pyromania shirt, but I think Star Wars > Def Leppard for me, as much as I love my music. And I'm pretty sure the AC/DC and Def Leppard shirts were more expensive than the Ript apparel one.
I still need to buy a new pen for my tablet (since I stupidly dropped the other one in my glass of water) and something else very important that escapes me right now with my next check, so I'm officially tied down. I can't wait for summer so I can get more hours somewhere.

In other news, holy shit, someone find a defibrillator, because have you seen the promo pics for SPN 7x12? Not to spoil anyone...but..JFC, Jensen. *_____________* Nobody should be allowed to look that good. I mean, normal regular human beings can never match up to that. Even the king of fitted three-piece suits and hats (Neil ♥) has got some competition here.

I officially nominate him for the lead in the next film-noir/Dick Tracy detective-style film.

So, got up off my rear and watched Elf. So many hearts in my eyes. I think I know why everyone loves it so much. It' just so...squishable! Squishy! /wanders into Nemo
Also, apparently [personal profile] lunasky3 and I have determined there needs to be an SPN/Elf fusion with Cas as Buddy and Heaven as the North Pole.

Stargate's on TV now, and oh, S1 SGA, I have missed you muchly. Remember when Teyla was kickass and had long pink hair and fought a Wraith with nothing but a giant stick?
Yeah. You may have lost it amongst the later seasons.

Which reminds me of something I realized a long time ago. I think I've figured out why John/Elizabeth was always more popular in (the het side of) fandom than anything else, by miles. It's pretty much known by everyone that you automatically pick out your two favorite characters and start shipping them. That's kinda the way fans work. I always wondered why Sparky had such a large part of fandom, while the number of people who frequented the Jeyla thread were few but loyal. Admittedly, I didn't really start participating in fandom 'till the show was in the third season, so I don't know how it was in the beginning, before Elizabeth became a saint (which takes me on another tangent; why was it that everyone seemed to either love Elizabeth and hate Teyla or love Teyla and hate Elizabeth? I always thought they were both awesome and kickass in their own ways...). But when I was in fandom, I always got the feeling that Teyla was the least-favorite regular character in the show. I can forgive them for thinking that with the sad writing she got later on, but in the beginning, she was awesome. Anyways, the point is, I always thought that Elizabeth was miles more popular than Teyla, which is why the more canon ship(John/Teyla) was less popular than the kinda unrealistic(from a canon fulfillment point of view) ship(John/Elizabeth). I won't get into fandom's reasons for not liking Teyla, though I can guess at them (in a fandom compromised of largely slashers, Teyla was the main female threat to the OTP...Teyla was a kickass(physically in addition to mentally) strong get the picture. Why are women so hated in SPN?).
I don't know. For the, like, three of you who have any familiarity with SGA fandom, what were/are your thoughts?

In the interest of full disclosure, I've always been a John/Teyla shipper. Never genuinely got John/Elizabeth, to be honest. John/Teyla was the only thing that ever made sense in canon and out of it. *shrugs*

Also, this kinda turned into a rantish thing. Why does everything turn into that?

Out of all the shows with sad or uncertain futures, this one makes me the saddest. I'll miss Chuck, but, you gotta admit, it hasn't been exactly the best thing ever lately. And Community is awesome, but technobabble > comedy for me. It's got the best of the sci-fi world and the fantasy elements and the fanservice...I just. *sigh*

This post is brought to you by the Christmas episode, BTW, which was amazing and glorious and hilarious and I just wanted to squeeze it forever and ever. No Zane, though, which was kinda sad. I kept expecting him to pop up, since he'd make a hilarious cartoon, but I guess maybe Niall couldn't do it or they just didn't need Zane's character?

Birthday report will be up when I'm not falling down tired and have a spare moment. Spent the morning and most of the afternoon at work, and then we had practice at church early, so I was home for a grand total of fifteen minutes between 8am and 9pm. Ugh.
But as for my birthday, suffice it to say that I had lots of fun. We just stayed home and hung out, and it was good. I'm sad that the cake is magically disappearing into my tummy.

In the meantime, have a holiday love meme! You know you want to go tell me how much you love my dorky self.

Unrelated news, but I'm considering re-reading or trying to get back into Star Wars, specifically the books. It kills me to watch what happens after(and during) the Yuuzhan Vong War, but I've always loved everything that lead up to the I might give it a go. In all my spare time. When I'm not watching Psych or Sanctuary or Burn Notice or the myriad of other shows I'm behind on. WHY SCHOOL, WHY CAN'T I JUST WATCH TV ALL DAY LONG ALL THE TIME.

(I just added a random new friend, so if you're reading this, hi, new friend! Your username is what reminded me that I wanted to get back into Star Wars, so thanks for that! But I also added you because you seem pretty cool too.)

How fast are y'all at typing? Are you more of a touch-typist or do you have to look at what you're doing or are you just more of a hunt-n-peck kinda person?

I've always assumed that people who use the internet competently(i.e. competent enough to have a functioning LJ, lol) are pretty good typists, but someone pointed out to me that a lot of people these days can't type without watching their hands.

Personally I type a good solid 60wpm on Mavis Beacon without looking, but I developed that from when I was a kid and I'd spend hours and hours goofing off with writing and playing with HTML while watching what I was doing, so as time passed, I just muscle-memorized which letters were which, and it's stuck.

Random factlet; my mum says she could type 90wpm on the old-fashioned typewriters back in the day(since she was a medical transcriptionist, this was kinda necessary), which has me bowing in awe, because while those typewriters are fun as heck to use, they're a lot harder than computer keyboards to deal with.

Also! I wrote 1500 words of possibly incoherent fic about Lisa stumbling into Sam and Dean's next hunt and walking away...unchanged. Because someone told me it needed to be written. Maybe I'm finally catching that writing disease where it becomes hard to write less than 500w? Lord knows it's about time.
(For those who don't know; back when I was doing a ton of stuff in Merlin fandom, I often bemoaned the fact that I couldn't seem to write anything over a thousand words to save my life)

You know what I miss?

Andromeda. I was just surfing about my collection and stumbled across an episode from S3. I know pretty much every time I go back to it I say this, but it's true. I love the universe and the premise and the ridiculous plots and crazy canon AU/AR setups and the snappy dialog. It's not the bright-burn I get for some shows(you know who you are), but more of the slow-burn love that I have for Stargate. Which makes sense, considering I started watching it the year after it started on reruns that aired right before Stargate(so, 2001, just as I was hitting my peak SG1 love).
Anyways. The point is; it's really cheesy and it's getting to be pretty dated, but it had fantastic potential and a huge, expansive universe.

I totally need to rewatch.

In other news; I've still got to watch the latest Merlin. I've kinda been eaten whole by Community(ABED, COME, LET ME LOVE YOU, BOY), right now, so...there's that holding me up. Oh, and, y'know, RL. Silly things like school, work, etc. Ugh. Sorry I haven't been around much, guys! The weekend was crazy with playing catch-up. I'm trying to unwind on my off-hours by picspaming two of my favorite gorgeous things(Dean and the Impala) and watching far too much Community and Big Bang Theory.

re: scripts/deleted scenes and what is the word-of-God-canon material. If it was in the original draft, is it canon? What about later drafts? What about deleted scenes? Are the only things canon those we see onscreen as a part of the episode/movie itself? What about retconning; does it count if it's subtle and sensible, and not when it's whacky and odd? Or how about things stated during interviews/cons? Is it more canon if a writer says it vs. a producer vs. and actor(in this case, talking about a character)? What if the writers make a mistake early on and then fix it later in canon and interviews; is the original true, or is what they fixed it as the canon?

I've always been pretty liberal with what I consider canon, including deleted scenes and scenes that were in the filming drafts but got dropped for time or whatever, as well as stuff explicitly stated by writers/producers during interviews. Heck, I even consider most tie-ins canon. And I have no problem with tasteful retconning, most of the time. But I've noticed that a lot of fandom is very, very, very picky about what is canon and what isn't, to the point of discrediting and ignoring retcons and even things the writers themselves say was supposed to happen(I remember the crazy that went down when Joe Mallozzi stated that the writers had planned on a John and Teyla relationship, but hadn't gotten the chance to play it out).

So does most of this stem from fanatical fans who want to believe what they think is right, or are people too burned off trusting the people who create their shows?
IDK. Offer your thoughts. Is defining canon more of a show-by-show, fandom-by-fandom kinda thing?

*This post is brought to you by my wandering brain, How long Sam spent at Standford, and the script for Merlin 4x03. You're welcome.

Also, this kinda nifty things I stumbled across whilst lurking...and it actually got me right. My lovely southern drawl is too obvious to be missed by this thing, I guess. From the looks of it it doesn't look like it'd be that accurate but it seems to work, and it's fun!

What American accent do you have?

Southern. Love it or hate it, your accent says you're probably from somewhere south of the Ohio River.

If you're not from the South, you probably were overanalyzing the questions. Take the quiz again but don't think so hard next time.

but not really.

Does anyone else really wish that the original first draft pilot could have been a show too? 'Cause dang, I woulda watched that. Dean seemed so much more rough-around-the-edges and heck of a lot more daring. Also, I would have loved to see that teaser.

Happy Thanksgiving, to all of my American friends! For the rest of you...happy November 25th! :D

Finally finishing this up! Next I start 30 days of Stargate & 30 days of DW...maybe XD

Day 26 - OMG WTF? Season finale
Not exactly a season finale, but for the sake of this day, it fits. The Pandorica Opens(Doctor Who) takes the cake, I think. When it ended I definitely felt like stuff just got ~serious. Honorable mention goes to The Rising(John Doe) with it's last scene. Every time I see it I still get a OMGG WHAT WAS THAT!? feeling...especially since it's not like we're gonna get a resolution.

Day 27 - Best pilot episode best Pilot. Sanctuary for all(Sanctuary) was awesome...I loved the pilot for Primeval, too. Human Target had a really awesome pilot too. And of course, Children of the Gods was EPICNESS, especially the new version they just released.
Um, I know there are awesome ones, but I really can't think of them XD

Day 28 - First TV show obsession
Stargate SG-1 (lol I'm sure most of you know this) all the way. I never watched any of the other classic TV shows of the 90s, mostly because I was either in the middle of nowhere on a farm or because I was too young to even comprehend that there was a TV (yup, I don't even remember having a TV 'till maybe '95). Then we moved away from the farm and I found Stargate and..well, the rest, as they say, is history. Stargate got me online in '07 and brought me to LJ and twitter last year :D

Day 29 - Current TV show obsession
Really I'm not obcessing atm. I'm watching the Sarah Jane Adventures, but otherwise, nothing new. But I'm gearing up for the Merlin finale, Doctor Who Christmas special, and the return of there's all that on the horizon :D

Day 30 - Saddest character death
The answer to this one was honestly going to be Ashely Magnus, until I saw The End of Time for the first time. So I'd say Ten's regeneration is probably it, even if I love Eleven.
