This bit may mean nothing to most people, but it's very exciting for me. In my HAS program(Aerospace Engineering), we had a few projects these past couple weeks, and wow, they were so cool. The first one was a paper on specific careers available in the Aerospace sector. But that alone wasn't the cool part, though it did have lots of analysis, which I loved. The best part was that we had to research and write it all out in APA format. I guess some people hate stuff like that, but I love technically efficient ways of writing things, and I love that specific format. If I become a technical writer(which is something I've looked at doing as a back-up or secondary choice), I'll probably enjoy it so much.
The second thing that got me exited was a forum discussion we had to do regarding ethics. It was basically us being presented with a situation and told to figure out what to do, using the NSPE Code of Ethics for Engineers as guidelines. There wasn't a word-limit, but I think I may cause them to implement one. :P It was really fun to be able analyze a situation and consider various different sides of the argument that may or may not have been backed up by the Code. My brain was having a spazzy moment, and I just let it. That was nice.

So, basically, control-freak me loves analyzing stuff, technical and exacting stuff, and ALL THE DETAILS. That's not actually surprising in any way.

Ugh, I can't wait for my college classes to start up, though. We're not back 'till the 17th, which is nice, since that's the week after finals for HS, but it seems too far off right now. I miss having History to entertain me. Right now I'm spending my days making icons and studying for the HS finals, which I am certainly not looking forward to. I wonder sometimes if HS is just a giant game of peek-a-boo. As in, they make like miserable because you have no clue of what the real world is like, and then suddenly when you're done, you see what it's like outside, and all you can think is "...well, this is a little bit disappointing."

I may be missing getting out of the house every day, though. Shopping this weekend for my new glasses(I want to get the same frames, but new, to go with my new lenses, but apparently we have to shop around for two weeks. My dad does not get that if I don't like what we get, I literally will not wear them. That's something I'm gonna have stuck on my face for another couple of years, and I'm not going to look like an idiot.) and for whatever I need for basketball when it starts, so that should help get rid of some cabin fever. If we go back to HEB, I'm totally picking up the Def Leppard shirt I saw last week, though. And maybe the AC/DC one, too. We'll see.

And now, I should totally be in bed, because I have a finals review in five hours, and I'm going to be half-dead as is.

Back home! Which I am happy for. It's nice to be back on my computer and be back in my own bed. Mum is too. Hotels are always exhausting. And since we switched back over to our first doctor from the last time she had cancer, it was like a complete breath of fresh air.

For those who haven't heard, another huge selling point for DW just went live. Namely, the ability to fully import a community from LJ to DW. Everything. As of right now, it's restricted to paid accounts and communities with less than 100k comments to prevent the queue from overloading and to ensure the system doesn't all crash from the overload, but they expect to be able to raise those limits in a couple weeks or so once traffic slows down.

Not gonna make any prognosis as to how this will effect fandom and LJ, but...well, you can draw your own conclusions.

In a DW related note, this entry on Technical Debt that [staff profile] denise wrote earlier this year is a fascinating look at what it took to get DW up and off the ground and why LJ has some of the problems it does (and, indirectly, because it was written before the new roll-out and commenting layout and why LJ had to completely recode their S1 layout to give us the new version). I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the difference between DW/LJ beyond the obvious as well as just because it's incredibly interesting from any point of view.

I've been reading a lot, pages and pages, of essays, how-to guides, explanations, and other kinds of informative stuff about DW, LJ, the differences, the pros for LJ and the cons for DW and vice versus, and I just have to say, wow. I feel a lot more informed about making a decision in the future at some point about leaving LJ for good. Don't worry; it isn't happening yet and probably won't for a while, but it's done a lot to explain why LJ is the way it is and how it works internally vs. how we see it working as users. Ditto with DW(which is, by nature, a lot more transparent, and therefore needs less external rationalization/explanations).
It all made my analytical geeky side so happy. Literally. I'm reading an essay on why the current advertising method isn't gonna work for social media for much longer.

For some lighter fare, Jibjab says adios to 2011!

Notes: This is my first erasure, so I hope I did the awesomeness of the genre justice. It's short, but hopefully gets the point across. I only took the first portion of the original fic and erased it, because that's what felt right. The headings are my own additions, but that's just to differentiate between the two sections.

It seems like all the shows are trying to make everyone sad for the holidays. Yay. *sobs* Seriously, though. I don't cry at TV, really, no matter how I dramatize doing so. I can count on one hand the number of TV episodes I've cried over. And this SPN episode mad the list.
My heart.

In a much more important note, check this out! AWARENESS, YESSSS!

I'm hooked on Psych. It's so awesome. Watched the pilot and first couple of episodes last night, and they were fantastic. It's just the right balance between hilarious and ridiculous and awesome. :D

Anddd...I dl'd the episodes of Sanctuary I haven't seen this season. Apparently Tesla's in one, and I kinda like being all caught up, even if I'm not at all as into it as I was.

Finally! There is some absolutely fantastic meta and talk over here about Supernatural 708. If you're into objectively examining fandom or offering your opinions on it, gooooo check it out. The original post does a pretty good job of laying out the situation and asking questions that cut pretty well to the heart of fandom's issues with what happened. And the variety of responses is fascinating from an observational point of view. fandom can have an active discussion without falling apart into ugliness!

→New layout([livejournal.com profile] sgmajorshipper), new icons, new default...It's a summer makeover!

→Sanctuary, I do not know how I should feel about that finale. IDEK. I still love you, mostly, but...that's a slippery slope.

slight spoilers for the Burn Notice season 5 premiere )

Also, this kinda nifty things I stumbled across whilst lurking...and it actually got me right. My lovely southern drawl is too obvious to be missed by this thing, I guess. From the looks of it it doesn't look like it'd be that accurate but it seems to work, and it's fun!

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Southern. Love it or hate it, your accent says you're probably from somewhere south of the Ohio River.

If you're not from the South, you probably were overanalyzing the questions. Take the quiz again but don't think so hard next time.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

I have little to say, other than I finished my tags reorganization..thing. It's a bit amusing to me. I went from 600+ tags to about 150, and it still feels like a ton of tags...at least it's a bit prettier! I think...LOL

Oh! I posted another Doctor Who fic, and it's one I'm rather ridiculously proud of...considering it's the first time I've written TenII OR Fluff/Non-angst in the DW 'verse. And it's not horribly bad, judging from the comments I've gotten.
Yeah, that's basically me doing some anti-whining, but heyy...I think I have a right. I had just finished reading [livejournal.com profile] professor_spork 's wonderful Feeling Electric 'verse fics. (HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE COMIC BOOKS+ DOCTOR/ROSE?), and I was feeling like a rather bad writer in comparison...I was pretty :(-ey, but I was half-way asleep when this idea whapped me upside the head and I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep till I wrote it...so I did. And unlike all my other 2AM story ideas, it's not completely ~out there!
So proud. XP

And now for a meme;
Day 10 - A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving

Well, my first reaction to Merlin was skepticism. A cracky take on King Arthur? A British TV show? Needless to say, my opinion not only changed, it changed radically. Now about half my favorite shows are in fact British/cracky-fun. So my opinion was changed quiet a bit in that regards, but there haven't been many shows I didn't like and then did. I generally stick with my first impressions on things, so I don't deal with this much. I'd say there's only one show that I was encouraged forcefully to watch and then ended up falling in love with, and that's Star Trek: Voyager. See, I wasn't really a Star Trek fan. I could appreciate it's place in things and it's role as progenitor of most modern scifi, but that didn't mean I has to love it. 'Course, that's changed, in general, since Voyager and Enterprise and Star Trek XI, but Voyager is what opened my eyes to the fact that it isn't all that bad. Still not quiet as obsessed/in love with it as my brother though. And I still tease huge Star Trek fans.

Heee! Me is gleefull, because me figured out how to make meself some gifs. As in, animated pictures. I made one from the Primeval opening credits (since it's the only show I have dl'd right within easy reach).

IT'S A REAL, LIVE, GIF! Still kinda flaily over my mad skills. And guess what? I didn't use a single tutorial either. :D So I think I'm gonna be going a bit crazy making gifs. You have been warned, kay? Eeee this makes me very happy. And on that note...what do you guys think I should make gifs of?

Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)

Sadly enough, this doesn't have a real answer, because I haven't seriously gotten into any shows aired new this TV season. I watched V for a while, and I have a feeling that I will end up getting into it eventually, but right now I'm not. And nothing much else appeals to me. Except SGU. At first I was hating it. A lot. But then I had to take a step back and say, "OK, this show, this isn't Stargate, not to me. Therefore I'm going to give up on comparing it to Stargate." And once I did that, I found I could watch it without going crazy. And now I can accept it as a decent sci-fi show. So, considering it's the only show I've watched that's new this year, I suppose that makes it my favorite.
