Yeah, I'm still all over that LJ/Dreamwidth thing...sue me
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all had fantastic days! My flist is full of Christmas wishes so I'll keep it short; you guys are all awesome, and I couldn't ask for a better group of friends to have. ♥
Christmas went...as well as could be. Pretty good for our family, of which I'm very proud. What does it say about me that I woke up and thought "Oh, hey, Doctor Who day!"
But the real reason for this post! Dreamwidth is officially about to release Community Imports. For those who don't know, Dreamwidth allows you to back up/copy/import everything from your individual LJ account into a new Dreamwidth one. Before now, there was no way if you wanted to move your comm to the safety of DW, because they hadn't developed a system to do so. But, apparently one of their lead developers has been working on it, and they've decided to announce it this week as a sort of Merry Christmas. It won't officially be released for another week or so, but, still, it's exciting! This could really, really change the landscape around here, if comms get transferred over. I think it should be, of course, something like a vote or such for the comms with a large userbase, but, still. It could pave the way for fandom to jump ships. *shrugs* And that makes me happy because DW is sorta like the land flowing with milk and honey and shiny new features.
It's very, very interesting. I got very excited when I saw the news update last night. To be honest, I hope fandom starts transitioning. I don't want it all gone, because LJ does have lots of benefits, but, I'd like to see DW actually give it some competition. That would be amazing, because that might drive LJ to listen to the users, maybe.
(For other DW users, there's even more cool features they announced re: comments AND TAG MERGE OMG DW YOU CAN HAVE MY SOUL HERE TAKE IT and the staff actually answer and explain stuff and just in general...I'd totally recommend reading the whole update!)
Anyways. Wanted to share the news, for those who don't have DW or weren't paying a ton of attention. :)

I want those comms to move so bad, though. Even if it'll probably not happen for a while.

(some of that ramble would have been in my subject heading...I miss my subject heading)
That's exciting news, DW is obviously the solution/nearest thing to what LJ WAS - and I hadn't heard that, nor had I any idea what Comm importing was so thank you :D
EEK LJ are going to lose a lot of people over this, so many people already have dreamwidth accounts anyway...I hope they get their act together before I have to choose whether to keep a paid account next year O_O
It'll probably take me a while to get used to all the red. It's the opposite of blue after all...but yeah I think you're right - Fandom's relationship with LJ is coming to an end eventually, and they're now actively accelerating the date.

Glad to share the knowledge! I want everyone to be well-informed about stuff, so hence my obsessive posting on the matter. XD DW is slowly becoming the best of both worlds compared to LJ...and so long as we get what we need, I much prefer DW anyways. They deserve my attention.
I think fandom isn't gonna make one giant switch over...heck, I bet it won't even happen 'till LJ does the next stupid thing to remind people of how royally screwed we're being...and DW will be right there, waiting, to accept the influx. I think fandom and LJ were always gonna part ways...fandom usually doesn't like all the things LJ tends to stand for...but now it's just a matter of how long. I just want to sit back and LOL at LJ because it seems like they don't even realize it, too.

I think I did sign up on DW with on open ID (maybe?) a while ago, but I didn't really get into it, and the way I see it (or have seen till now) it's too much of a closed community - with the whole invitation needed to open proper accounts - for me to really like it. But maybe its numbers are the real problem for LJ, so, who knows, maybe one day I'll try and hunt for some code to create a proper account at DW too (if it still works that way, which I totally don't know :P)

It's not as closed off as it sounds, actually. For this month, you don't have to have invites to sign up; it's just like LJ. And that's good, since a ton of LJ users are...maybe not jumping ship, but they are keeping their options open with a DW account. I can totally get not wanting to switch over yet, though. It's still small compared to LJ, and LJ still holds pretty much all of fandom, so if you already don't to a whole lot on LJ then there's no reason to go somewhere where there's even fewer options...yet.
If you do decide to switch over at some point in the future, or even just for backup purposes, let me know, 'cause I still got a handful of invites. :)

That being said, glee! :D
