I'm thinking Merlin needs to make his own mistakes, do his own thing, and pay for it on his own consistently. Which doesn't happen with Gaius's on-again-off-again advice.

That was the best part of the episode; he took responsibility for what he did! I like to think it's because he felt bad about not taking some measure of responsibility for anything regarding Gwen.
