my mostly positive Merlin 4x10 thoughts and other TV

So, for an episode I was really not looking forward to and had to push myself to watch, that was surprisingly good. It wasn’t like the first two years, but it did what Merlin does best; it took a weak basic storyline and made it amazing.

The acting was arguably the best part. Colin and Bradley really brought it, especially Bradley. I was very proud of his emoting over Gwen in the beginning and then the last few scenes. He’s come so far from the little boy in Series 1. It’s interesting that I feel like in this episode it really showed how far both Arthur and Bradley have come. Arthur looks like he’s king, and he tries in this episode to be a good king. I can’t help but wonder if that was a little bit of overcompensation for what happened last week? Since it’s apparent that while Gwen was absent, she wasn’t exactly gone from the storyline.

It was pleasantly surprising to discover that the reset button was nowhere in sight. Elyan was Gwen’s brother. Arthur was thinking about Gwen and didn’t want to talk about it. The knights were wonderful and togetherness was everywhere. Gwaine actually seemed to have a semblance of a personality again. Merlin and Arthur continued to have a normal friendship that actually was nice.

Though, I was surprised that they went further back and picked a massacre that was before the one in 2x03 after he went after Morgana. Still, it’s a nice reminder that Arthur may be trying to change, but he still carried on his father’s mantle for a long time before Merlin came into the picture, and he did plenty of his own bad things. I admit, I saw it coming, but it was nice to see him take responsibility. And he was human in the whole freaking out bit before, too.

My dislike for Gaius continues to grow. He’s so wishy-washy and gives kinda crappy advice. The only thing it seems he’s good for is exposition. Which is a sucky reason for a character to exist.

On more shallow notes; ELYAN AND GWAINE HAD SCENES <3 And they replaced Elyan’s voice with the kid’s. That wasn’t cool. I miss the teddy wrapped in a blanket. Also, the preview for next week. What was Gwen wearing? Purple looks good on her, but that dress looked hideous once you get a good look at it. WHY IS THERE A CUT-OUT. WHY IS IT SHIMMERY. I hope maybe it grows on me or something? IDK, I’m rather disappointed with her dresses since Series 2. Why can’t she have a nice ratty-chic look like Morgana?

I haven't read anyone else's thoughts, so I have no idea how everyone else feels about it, but as a whole, it was a lot better than I anticipated.
As always, please no spoilers for future episodes in the comments. Thank you! <3

SHE IS LIKE THE SPIRIT ANIMAL OF FANDOM. She actually reminds me of my history professor. A lot. I'm just sad that I'm nearly done. Also, Tom Ellis, sir, you are even more attractive without the crazy evilness and the whacko hair.

I still cannot find it in myself to watch the last episode of Supernatural again. If there were any happy parts, I might be able to tug myself through it, but it's all horrible delicious angst. Though, I gotta say, I'm also still a little squicky over the whole scene with Bobby's dad. Not because of what Bobby did, but because of the very unflinching way they portrayed the abuse, which is tricky for me for a myriad of reasons. Interesting how that makes twice they've hit possibly triggery/traumatic subjects this seasons(Becky's almost-rape/tied down with sexual intent and now this). I know that's part of the show; something is always gonna squick someone(I'm sure S1's Shadows is pretty squicky for some, because that was a heck of a lot more than even what Becky did, I thought), but I've never actually been hit by it before in this way. I think I'm getting what people mean when they say they can't watch something(in my case a scene, but I can see why someone would skip the whole episode) literally because of a squick factor.
But yeah, I still can't rewatch it, mainly for the angst and the sadness and everyone's faaaaaaaacessss. The emotions are just still too raw. I was watching a music video that got shared, and just crying my eyes out IRL. I just want next year to get here so we can have more episodes to move on.

I totally know what you mean about being totally turned off by an episode because of something that squicks you.

I have an episode of CSI and one of Fringe that I WILL NOT WATCH EVER AGAIN. No, just no.

I have a thing with kids getting hurt/suffering at the hands of the adult. Both episodes have that topic in them. I have no personal experience with that, but, dude, my brain can't handle it.

Which Fringe episode is it?

The Equation from Season 1.

Ugh.

I am starting to dislike Gaius too. He sucks at advising Merlin.

I'm not even questioning what kind of dress Gwen has because all I'm wondering is how/where she got it...since she's living in the woods, hah.

L O L, I will go with that!

Totally agree with you on Gaius. I love Richard Wilson, but Gaius gives the worst advice ever! I'm sick of Gaius telling Merlin that he should tell Arthur about stuff. Really I'm tired of it.

I totally love what you said about Arthur. He really has grown up since series 1 and I do hope that he continues to grow and take responsibility for his crappy decisions in the past.

And yay Elyan and Gwaine!

[identity profile] ella-rose88.livejournal.com 2011-12-04 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking Merlin needs to make his own mistakes, do his own thing, and pay for it on his own consistently. Which doesn't happen with Gaius's on-again-off-again advice.

Definitely. He needs to make his own mistakes and learn from them on his own. We can't always go to others for advice because sometimes we need to learn things by ourselves.

That was the best part of the episode; he took responsibility for what he did! I like to think it's because he felt bad about not taking some measure of responsibility for anything regarding Gwen.

Oh I agree and it was the best part of the episode for me and gives me hope that once Arthur finds out the truth about Gwen (if he does which I hope he does) that he takes some of the responsibility with what happened with Gwen. Arthur has shown that if he feels like he is responsible for something that he does own up to it so I hope this happens with Gwen.

I have trouble with Merlin...because where an ep does amazing (like Arthur growing up) they also often make me want to beat my head against the wall.

IDK. I genuinely enjoy Merlin and I liked this ep (OMG GWAINE AND ELYAN!), but I also have a lot of thoughts about the show as a whole that I have so much trouble articulating...

/ramble.

I love the gems! and the good moments. and it's fun even when it's bad, so I can mostly deal.

Someday I want to articulate all my thoughts about it, though

THE VOICE THING! TOTES AGREE!

And the scenes,my whole fam is shipping Ely/Gwaine now!

WTF is she wearing? Seriously. I miss the lilac dresses.

Me and mum realised one thing today: We are Miranda and her mother.
Awkward moment that. SUCH FUN!

[identity profile] mydoctortennant.livejournal.com 2011-12-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OF COURSE I DO! WE DUBBED HIM TEDDY VOICE!

To be fair. I ship them all any which way, but those two mainly XD
Elyan is totes the Knight-bike...

I like both liacy dresses, but s2 one more.

Only she's not trying to marry me off quite yet. (I did notice that. Yes XD)

Never heard the term 'Village bike' or 'town bike'? Everybody hops on and off if you catch my drift ;D

It was gorgeous.

Eep, might want to try telling that to a certain boy who isn't Gary but is in these terms of things... actually - he is my Gary completely XD

[identity profile] mydoctortennant.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good XD

A kind-of Gary. Nobody is as perfect as Gary though. XD

MIRANDA. Ooh, I'm so glad you're watching it! I was DEVASTATED when I found out the next series wouldn't be out until next year, but so it goes. *sighs*

WHY IS IT SHIMMERY. I hope maybe it grows on me or something? IDK, I’m rather disappointed with her dresses since Series 2. Why can’t she have a nice ratty-chic look like Morgana?

LOL I have so many answers.

1) Seeing as she was "acquired" as a "serving wench," I'm guessing she had ZERO say in that outfit and the guy who "acquired" her forced her to dress like that. It's supposed to be revealing because, well ... you can probably figure out the situation she's found herself in (ugh, it's so icky D =).

2. SO, she will NOT be wearing it on a daily basis, and there's consequently no need to get used to it.

3. Because she isn't living in a cave and her style is drastically different from Morgana's. =P

Gaius just needs to gtfo.
