my mostly positive Merlin 4x10 thoughts and other TV
So, for an episode I was really not looking forward to and had to push myself to watch, that was surprisingly good. It wasn’t like the first two years, but it did what Merlin does best; it took a weak basic storyline and made it amazing.
The acting was arguably the best part. Colin and Bradley really brought it, especially Bradley. I was very proud of his emoting over Gwen in the beginning and then the last few scenes. He’s come so far from the little boy in Series 1. It’s interesting that I feel like in this episode it really showed how far both Arthur and Bradley have come. Arthur looks like he’s king, and he tries in this episode to be a good king. I can’t help but wonder if that was a little bit of overcompensation for what happened last week? Since it’s apparent that while Gwen was absent, she wasn’t exactly gone from the storyline.
It was pleasantly surprising to discover that the reset button was nowhere in sight. Elyan was Gwen’s brother. Arthur was thinking about Gwen and didn’t want to talk about it. The knights were wonderful and togetherness was everywhere. Gwaine actually seemed to have a semblance of a personality again. Merlin and Arthur continued to have a normal friendship that actually was nice.
Though, I was surprised that they went further back and picked a massacre that was before the one in 2x03 after he went after Morgana. Still, it’s a nice reminder that Arthur may be trying to change, but he still carried on his father’s mantle for a long time before Merlin came into the picture, and he did plenty of his own bad things. I admit, I saw it coming, but it was nice to see him take responsibility. And he was human in the whole freaking out bit before, too.
My dislike for Gaius continues to grow. He’s so wishy-washy and gives kinda crappy advice. The only thing it seems he’s good for is exposition. Which is a sucky reason for a character to exist.
On more shallow notes; ELYAN AND GWAINE HAD SCENES <3 And they replaced Elyan’s voice with the kid’s. That wasn’t cool. I miss the teddy wrapped in a blanket. Also, the preview for next week. What was Gwen wearing? Purple looks good on her, but that dress looked hideous once you get a good look at it. WHY IS THERE A CUT-OUT. WHY IS IT SHIMMERY. I hope maybe it grows on me or something? IDK, I’m rather disappointed with her dresses since Series 2. Why can’t she have a nice ratty-chic look like Morgana?
I haven't read anyone else's thoughts, so I have no idea how everyone else feels about it, but as a whole, it was a lot better than I anticipated.
As always, please no spoilers for future episodes in the comments. Thank you! <3

SHE IS LIKE THE SPIRIT ANIMAL OF FANDOM. She actually reminds me of my history professor. A lot. I'm just sad that I'm nearly done. Also, Tom Ellis, sir, you are even more attractive without the crazy evilness and the whacko hair.
I still cannot find it in myself to watch the last episode of Supernatural again. If there were any happy parts, I might be able to tug myself through it, but it's all horrible delicious angst. Though, I gotta say, I'm also still a little squicky over the whole scene with Bobby's dad. Not because of what Bobby did, but because of the very unflinching way they portrayed the abuse, which is tricky for me for a myriad of reasons. Interesting how that makes twice they've hit possibly triggery/traumatic subjects this seasons(Becky's almost-rape/tied down with sexual intent and now this). I know that's part of the show; something is always gonna squick someone(I'm sure S1's Shadows is pretty squicky for some, because that was a heck of a lot more than even what Becky did, I thought), but I've never actually been hit by it before in this way. I think I'm getting what people mean when they say they can't watch something(in my case a scene, but I can see why someone would skip the whole episode) literally because of a squick factor.
But yeah, I still can't rewatch it, mainly for the angst and the sadness and everyone's faaaaaaaacessss. The emotions are just still too raw. I was watching a music video that got shared, and just crying my eyes out IRL. I just want next year to get here so we can have more episodes to move on.

Someday I want to articulate all my thoughts about it, though
