Okay now that that's outta the way, and you assumedly clicked on the cut, let's begin. This was kinda discussed on

camelot_love when the on-location pictures were first released, but never to any kind of detail (at least not while I was there). But this fascinates me to no end. Really. Check out the pictures. The first one is from season two (credit for picture goes to Merlin Wiki), the woman being Igraine, Arthur's deceased mother, who was 'conjured' by Morgause. It's unknown if she's actually his mother or not, but judging by what she said, it is possible. The second picture (credit for posting goes to

yavannauk), is of Katie McGrath from on-location in Pierrefonds, France. Notice anything similar? They're obviously wearing the SAME dress! If you recall, last season (S2), Morgana disappeared with Morgause after being poisoned by Merlin. Obviously she survived, and has returned to Camelot. Now, the biggest question is...why is she wearing Ygraine's dress? Is it a huge plot point or just a lack of costumes? Has Morgause sent her back in Ygraine's dress for a reason? How long will it take Merlin and Arthur to notice? (Surely they're not that stupid to not notice, right?) Anyway. Anyone want to start speculating on the matter?

Might Uther eventually get suspicious if Igraine had a child and then could have no more?
Also, would Goloris have trusted Morgana with Uther if he'd known that there was the slightest chance Uther would find out that he had had a child with Igraine? We all know Uther loved Igraine, and because of that love he did some pretty drastic stuff; so it wouldn't be that hard to imagine what he'd do if he found out that his wife had had another child by another man. He would have been less likely to eliminate magic users (feeling betrayed by his wife would have made him probably bitter towards her?).
I dunno, just thinking, but both Igraine and Uther seemed to have had eyes pretty much for only each other, considering their strength of character

True, I've never taken that into consideration. I'm probably trying to stick to the original legend as much as possible and denying that it's not going anywhere!

I suppose I feel free-er to think outside the box, since I haven't read much of the legends surrounding it. I know the basics but I feel free to make my own legend in most regards. But your idea does have merit...it's not totally insane, and it just might work if you can fit the timeline around it.

Unless Uther was the reason why they couldn't have children. I still think at this point we should take Igraine being barren at face value but if there does turn out to be a twist and she did have a child before, it still could be down to him.

I agree that Uther might have felt some resentment if Igraine had a child with someone else, but his love for her is so strong that I imagine he'd feel more resentment towards the child than Igraine. Besides whose to say that she was even with Uther at the time? Like I said 'Igraine-barren-face-value' but I'm just saying anything is possible.

The bottom line for me is wanting to know why Morgause's birth was so significant and why everyone wanted Uther to believe that she had died at birth?

I admit, I'd never really considered the fact that Uther might have been the one who couldn't have children...but it would explain a great many things.

That is the big question right now, though? And the Uther being the issue idea would explain some of those questions.

I started to think about Uther being the issue after I started to wonder whether Gorlois might be the parent that Morga.2 shared. A friend and I had a long debate about it! lol! ;)

It would explain a few things. Hypothetically if Uther was the reason they couldn't have children rather than Igraine then it might explain better the mentality of going to Nimueh without telling Igraine her. He might have thought he could get away with it.

Exactly! One of the biggest things that bothered me has been the whole secrecy about it;

why

did Uther never tell Igraine, and

HOW

did he get away with it without telling her?

It's always bothered me too. The way that ghost!Igraine described the event and chose her words "He was desperate for an heir... but I could not conceive" / "He betrayed me" / "He asked for [Nimueh's] help in conceiving a child" / "Your father deceived you as he deceived me!" it sounds as thought Igraine didn't realise or know until either she had Arthur, or with the hindsight she probably got through being dead. Yet if she was barren then wouldn't she have suspected straight away that Uther must have done something? Granted, if he was the problem she might have raised an eyebrow but I imagine she'd be less suspicious.

Like I said I think we should take the "Igraine can't have children" at face value for now, bit that doesn't stop a lot of things being better explained through it being Uther that was the problem.

Mhm! You'd think she would have noticed that she who was barren had suddenly gotten pregnant. But it would make sense if it was more on Uther's side.

But Nimueh said Igraine was barren, and you'd think Nimueh and her group of powerful witches could figure out whether it was on Uther's side or hers.

We'll have to wait and see. This show isn't exactly big on continuity and we can't know for certain if just because Nimueh was a powerful witch she knew every detail.

Like I said I'm still taking the Igraine-was-barren at face value but I'm just not ruling out the writers making a twist.

That's the thing that I don't get. If she was barren she must have realised straight away. The thing is that I don't think Igraine had fully come to terms with dying the way she did until she saw Arthur. If she'd have known she'd have had nine months to come to terms with it. Yet her feeling of betrayal from Uther and her statement that he "deceived" her suggests she didn't know until much later.

I look forward to getting to the bottom of this.
